Methodology

Every figure on this site is an estimate. Diversity Map models these estimates from public street signals, such as shop and restaurant listings, places of worship, and school language provision. It then calibrates them against official statistics at the finest available level. Official numbers provide calibration and population counts. Diversity Map does not reproduce register extracts or present an estimate as an official figure.

Names-signal coverage

An area must have names-signal data before Diversity Map can show an estimate. The standard view puts country estimates into eight broad groups. The optional detailed view shows country estimates, but it is less precise. Unknown and ambiguous names stay outside all displayed groups. An area without names-signal coverage has no displayed estimate.

Three absences

A missing number can have three meanings. Diversity Map shows each meaning in a different way. Only suppressed values use a hatched pattern.

Suppressed
The source has data, but the value is below its publication threshold.
Not collected
No calibration source exists at this area level, so Diversity Map does not publish an estimate.
Not covered
The area has no street signals and no calibration source.

Suppression

Diversity Map does not publish an area below its publication floor. It also suppresses a displayed country or group with fewer than five signal observations. The page shows the word Suppressed. It never shows the value as zero.

Privacy

Diversity Map never shows information about one person or one business. It shows street signals only as counts for an area and category. It withholds a category with fewer than three signals and includes it only in the withheld count.
